How To : The Pouf

The Pouf

IMPORTANT: Don't go too crazy with this look. Keep the Pouf a reasonable size!

STEP 1 - LIFT
Start with a two-inch square of hair gathered from the front of your head. Spritz with a volumising spray from the hairline to two inches above the root.

STEP 2 - BLOWDRY
Wrap hair under and around a large round brush. Blow-dry, blasting the roots with cool air - that's what sets the style.

STEP 2 - HEIGHTEN
Build volume by taking small sections of hair and teasing it toward the root. Then smooth the kinked-out hair by gently combing in into pompadour form (A woman's hairstyle formed by sweeping the hair straight up from the forehead into a high, turned-back roll.)

Gather into a pouf and use your fingers to shape and play with the height. Fasten with pins and you're good to go.

Celebrity Hairstyles - Lindsay Lohan: Red Again?

Earlier this year we were shocked to see photos of Disney-movie starlet, Lindsay Lohan, looking gaunt and pasty. She lost a dramatic amount of weight, rumours were she was suffering from an eating disorder.

She was almost un-recognisable - her beautiful, curvy figure was practically gone and her famous red locks had been bleached. Some celebrities should not mess with their natural hair color.

However, I'm pleased to announce that recent photos of Lindsay Lohan show her sporting a much more flattering hair color.

Her hair was red back in September for the Premiere Movie Awards, and just last month at a Fendi store opening she was seen with a new, darker hair color.

Personally, we all agree red hair brings out the best of features, but this rich, chocolately brown is certainly an improvement.... As is the slight weight gain!

Big Hair Is Back This Season!

Whether your hair is curly or straight, you can give your roots a boost for some seriously sexy hair!

Big, bouncy, glamous hair was the rage at this years Emmy awards. Its also been spotted all over the catwalks (Versace, Chanel, Michael Kors).

Don’t be scared – this voluminous doesn’t have to bring back horrible eighties flashbacks. Instead opt for a more natural look – take note of your hair’s natural texture and flow and work with that.

Giving curly hair volume can sometimes be tricky – you don’t want to end up with frizzy hair. To avoid the frizz-factor, use John Frieda Sheer Blonde Full-Blown Blonde Volumizing Spray on the roots of your hair before gently blow-drying. Use a low speed and low heat and direct the dryer at the roots to give extra lift and a tousled finish.

Don’t be put off by the name – it works on brunettes too!

DIY BACKCOMBING

Backcombing is a great way to boost your hair. It’s a form of teasing.

  • Take a section of hair, lift it up and place a fine-toothed comb under the section of hair. Start at the middle of the section and comb down against the direction of the hair.
  • For an all-over backcomb, take small sections at a time and tease. Lightly brush over the top layer of hair to finish.
  • For a backcombed ponytail, tease hair at the crown and pull back and secure with a snagless elastic.

Want Beautiful Curly Hair?

Naturally curly hair needs moisture to keep it healthy and looking beautiful, rather than dried out and frizzy. We're not talking about grease, but you should definitely be avoiding products with drying alcohol.

Some curly haired girls will skip every other shampoo and just use conditioning rinses. You should shampoo at least once at week if your scalp is oily or if you have a building up of products. However, curly hair will become too dry and frizzy if you shampoo too often.
Use a moisturizing shampoo to help hydrate your scalp. Another tip is to comb some conditioner throughout your hair before shampooing.
On the non-shampooing days just rinse your hair with warm water, apply conditioner and rinse well. This will give you clean hair without stripping away the protective oils.
If mousse is not enough to stop your hair from going frizzy, then you should use some leave-in conditioning products, or anti-frizz hair serums.
John Frieda has a huge range of Frizz-Ease products specifically made to control frizzy, puffy, flyaway hair.
Step 1: Cleanse with Frizz-Ease Smooth Start Defrizzing & Nourishing Shampoo.
Step 2: Condition with Frizz-Ease Defrizzing & Nourishing Conditioner.
Step 3: Use Frizz-Ease Hair Serum. This serum works brilliantly when used with the other products, but can also be used successfully alone to control frizz. Apply the serum to wet hair.

How To Avoid Split Ends

Ahhh the agony of split ends! Your hair's worst enemy. Split ends are caused by over brushing, exaggerated backcombing, brushing wet hair, coloring and perming, vigorous towel drying, elastic bands, hair accessories and your health.
PHEW! Is there anything that doesn't cause split ends!!??
Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to repair your damaged hair once you have split ends. The only effective way to rid your hair of split ends is to have them cut off.
Once you get your hair cut and all the split ends removed, do not ignore your hair! You should trim your hair about every six weeks to prevent split ends returning.
A lot of women think the length of their hair is more important then their split ends... "I'm trying to grow my hair... If I skip my next trim my hair will grow longer, faster!"
WRONG! Do not ignore your split ends, because once they are there, they will only get worse. The longer you leave them, the further they will climb up the hair shaft. When you finally go for a trim, you will have no choice by to chop off even MORE of your hair!
It is better to have regular trims and keep those split ends at bay!
There are a few products that can temporarily cure your split ends by sealing and coating the split ends and smoothing them down. However, as soon as your hair is washed or brushed, they will re-appear. Intensive conditioning treatments offer a temporary solution by reconstructing the hair shaft.
But the only real solution for split ends is simply to avoid them.

How to avoid split ends:

  • Do not brush your hair when it's wet. Wet hair stretches up to 25% and is most vunerable. Use a wide tooth comb to gently de-tangle your hair.
  • Give your colored or permed hair the extra care it deserves. Use appropriate hair treatments.
  • Heated appliances such as hair dryers and straightening irons can dry out your hair and make it brittle. Avoid these appliances as much as possible. If you have to use them, use a protective product.
  • Let your hair dry naturally whenever you can; have a day, perhaps Sunday where you don't blow dry your hair, use product or straighten your hair.
  • Rather than towel drying your hair, try to blot it gently instead.
  • Avoid using rubber bands to tie up your hair. Use covered elastic bands, preferably the ones without the metal, as these can pull and tear your hair.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Your health and diet can affect your hair condition - a low fat diet can cause dull, dry hair which will split faster because there is not enough lubrication on the hair follicle.
